Prayer and the African Method of Bible Study were foundational parts of the life and work of St. Francis House:
- SFH Morning Prayer, weekdays from 8 – 8:40am was open to all, We evolved and simplified our service over the years but always included the lectionary Scripture readings and Psalm as well as silence and a reading from Robert Ellsberg’s All Saints: Daily Reflections on Saints, Prophets, and Witnesses for Our Time which included not only traditional saints and founders of religious communities but also Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. , Steve Biko, Fannie Lou Hamer,
Bill Stringfellow, Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin and the stories of lesser known but powerful figures from around the world.
- Our community of residents — members and guests — participated in weekly business meetings, African Method of Bible Study and daily individual prayer or meditation.
- Tuesday Contemplative Prayer — 11:30 to noon (through 2010)
- Evening Prayer before Clarification of Thought, including a shortened form of African Method of Bible Study before our community meal followed by conversation for Clarification of Thought.
The practice of African Method of Bible Study deepened the fellowship and ability to listen for all the members of the St. Francis House extended community.
